This week we should have a really fun day on Saturday. We’ve got the annual Singlehander’s Regatta scheduled for racing. This race is for singlehand boats such as Sunfish, Laser, Force 5, Optimist, etc. Sailing your normally crewed boat solo (like Flying Scot or Thistle) does not count. The club has 7 Sunfish sailboats that members are encouraged to check out at the website for this event. Anyone who has a similar boat like Sunfish, Laser, Force 5, Optimist, etc. is encouraged to bring that as well. Skipper’s meeting will be at 10:00 on A-dock, with racing on the water at 11:00. All boats will have a single start with Portsmouth handicap. I’m very disappointed that I will be out of town this weekend, because I don’t like to miss this race.
For those of you interested in learning more about the club Sunfish, please contact Sailing Director Craig Tourtellot (“Hilltop Sailor” on the Facebook group) and keep an eye on the club calendar for a weeknight orientation/practice session. Rear Commodore of Cruising Paul Servantes and Dave Radeschi have run two sessions so far this year, most recently last night, and we had a large turnout. So large that they may be convinced to pull together another session in a few weeks!
On Saturday night we have a Full Moon Raft-up scheduled. These usually begin around 6:00 in Heron Cove just out from the marina. First boat to arrive sets an anchor, and then others tie up.
The weather looks good this weekend, with dry, sunny skies and typical upper 80’s summer temperatures. Right now the wind forecast looks like a teaser day on Saturday with E winds around 4 knots. I’m not sure how that will really shake out as weather reports are suggesting a shift to SW winds by Saturday, so we’ll see. Sunday’s wind forecast looks a little better showing expected light SW winds building to 6-7 knots in the late afternoon. As usual, wind forecasts this early in the week are likely to change.
As you may have seen on the club Facebook group, there were vandals in the park last Thursday night who decided it would be fun to knock down the weather station out on marina point. This is maintained by Weatherflow.com, and some of you may be aware that a subscription to their family of sites (like sailflow.com) gives you access to real time wind speed and direction graphs. I have been working with park management to get information about the weather station to Weatherflow, so that they can get a plan together to repair the wind station. If you happen to have any information about the vandals, please contact the park office.
